Picosure Q & A

What Is Picosure?

Picosure is an innovative laser technology that is used to address a variety of skin concerns. The treatment uses picosecond technology to deliver heat energy to the pigment of the skin and surrounding tissue. It is a short pulse width that triggers changes in the skin.

What Skin Concerns Are Treated with Picosure?

Picosure is most often used for tattoo removal and to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, acne scarring and skin discoloration. If you have wrinkles, acne scarring, skin discoloration, or a tattoo that you want to get rid of, contact Dr. Patel at Advanced Dermatology & Laser Medical Center to make an appointment for an in-depth skin consultation.

What Happens During Picosure Treatment?

PicoSure typically requires fewer visits to reduce the appearance of scarring and feels gentler to the skin. Treatment typically takes 20-30 minutes, but if a large area is being treated, the session can take up to two hours. After treatment, the patient should take care to follow the doctor’s instructions for aftercare. Ice and sleeping with an extra pillow for elevation can help to reduce swelling. The patient should be careful to keep the treated area clean and apply an ointment like petroleum jelly to keep the skin moisturized to promote healing. They should avoid the sun and wear broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

How Many Treatments Are Needed for Tattoo Removal?

Patients who opt for Picosure treatments for tattoo removal will typically need fewer sessions than required with other forms of tattoo removal. The number of treatments needed depends on the size of the tattoo and the pigments that were used in the tattoo. Some colors are more challenging to remove than others. The doctor will provide an estimate on the number of necessary Picosure treatments after she has an opportunity to assess your tattoo. Dr. Patel sees patients who have had unsuccessful tattoo removal treatments and is able to remove the unwanted body art.
